学会の沿革と概要

　一般社団法人日本美術教育学会は、美術教育の理念を究明し、その実践の方策を探究することを目的として、1951（昭和26）年に創立されました。創立にあたっては、京都大学文学部教授・井島勉を会長に迎え、日本における美術教育研究の発展を担う学術団体として、その歩みを開始しました。以来、本学会は、理論と実践の両面から美術教育を問い続け、学校教育の現場に根ざしつつ、学術的蓄積を重ねることによって、わが国の美術教育の発展に着実に寄与してきました。

　創設期には、学術研究大会を京都大学において27回にわたり開催し、その後は開催地を全国へと広げながら、各地域における研究交流の場を築いてきました。こうした継続的な活動を通して、本学会は、美術教育に関する研究成果の発表と共有を促進するとともに、会員相互の研鑽と連携を深め、研究と実践の双方を支える全国的な学術基盤を形成してきました。

　また、学会誌『美術教育』および会報を継続的に刊行し、美術教育研究の蓄積と発信に努めてきたことも、本学会の重要な特色の一つです。学会誌においては、理論研究、実践研究、歴史研究、教材研究など、多様な視点からの成果が公表され、美術教育の学術的深化に大きく寄与してきました。こうした長年の実績により、本学会は、第13期から第19期まで連続して日本学術会議登録学術研究団体として位置づけられ、その後も日本学術会議協力学術研究団体として活動を続けています。

　2017（平成29）年には法人化を果たし、一般社団法人日本美術教育学会となりました。これにより、従来の任意団体としての歩みを踏まえつつ、より明確な組織運営のもとで学会活動を推進する体制が整えられました。法人化以後は、会長制から代表理事制へと移行し、初代代表理事・神林恒道、二代代表理事・大橋功、三代代表理事・細谷僚一へと、その責任と志が受け継がれてきました。そして四代、新関伸也が代表理事に就任し、本学会は新たな体制のもとで、次の時代に向けた歩みを進めています。

　本学会は、美術教育の研究・実践に携わる研究者、教員、実践者をはじめ、美術教育の重要な意義を確信し、その発展に寄与しようとする人々によって構成されています。その活動の中心には、年一回の学術研究大会の開催、学会誌『美術教育』の刊行、各種研究会・セミナー・シンポジウムの実施があり、会員はこれらの機会を通して研究成果を発表し、相互に学び合い、交流を深めています。とりわけ、本学会は、美術教育を単なる教科教育の一領域としてではなく、人間形成、文化形成、表現と鑑賞の往還を含む広い教育的営みとして捉え、その本質と可能性を多面的に探究してきました。

　このように、本学会は、長い歴史のなかで培われてきた学術的伝統を礎としながらも、常に時代の変化に応答し、新たな課題に向き合ってきた学術共同体です。学校現場における実践に深く根ざしつつ、研究と教育、理論と実践、地域と全国とを結びつける知的交流の場として、日本の美術教育の発展を支えてきたその意義は、きわめて大きいものがあります。

History and Overview of Art Education Society of Japan

The Art Education Society of Japan, a General Incorporated Association, was founded in 1951 with the aim of examining the principles of art education and exploring methods for its practice. At the time of its establishment, Professor Tsutomu Ijima of the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University, was appointed President, and the Society began its activities as an academic organization dedicated to advancing research in art education in Japan. Since then, the Society has continued to examine art education from both theoretical and practical perspectives and, by building a substantial body of scholarship rooted in the realities of school education, has made a steady contribution to the development of art education in Japan.

In its formative years, the Society held its academic conference twenty-seven times at Kyoto University. Thereafter, the conference venues expanded throughout the country, creating opportunities for scholarly exchange in various regions of Japan. Through these sustained activities, the Society has promoted the presentation and sharing of research findings in art education, deepened mutual learning and collaboration among its members, and established a nationwide academic foundation that supports both research and practice.

Another important characteristic of the Society has been its continuous publication of its academic journal, Bijutsu Kyoiku (Art Education), and its newsletter, through which it has worked to accumulate and disseminate research in the field. The journal has published studies from a wide range of perspectives, including theoretical research, practice-based research, historical research, and studies on curriculum and teaching materials, thereby contributing significantly to the academic advancement of art education. In recognition of these longstanding achievements, the Society was continuously registered as an academic research organization with the Science Council of Japan from its 13th through 19th terms, and it continues to serve as a cooperating academic research organization of the Science Council of Japan.

In 2017, the Society was formally incorporated and became the Art Education Society of Japan, a General Incorporated Association. This transition established a more clearly defined organizational structure for the promotion of its academic activities, while building upon its earlier history as a voluntary association. Following incorporation, the Society shifted from a president-based system to a representative director system. The responsibilities and aspirations of leadership were passed on from the first Representative Director, Tsunemichi Kanbayashi, to the second, Isao Ohashi, and the third, Ryoichi Hosoya. Shinya Niizeki has now assumed office as the fourth Representative Director, and under this new structure the Society is moving forward toward the next stage of its development.

The Society is composed of researchers, teachers, and practitioners engaged in the study and practice of art education, as well as all those who recognize its vital significance and seek to contribute to its advancement. At the core of its activities are the annual academic conference, the publication of the journal Bijutsu Kyoiku (Art Education), and the holding of various research meetings, seminars, and symposia. Through these opportunities, members present their research findings, learn from one another, and deepen their scholarly exchange. Above all, the Society has understood art education not merely as one field of subject teaching, but as a broad educational endeavor involving human development, cultural formation, and the dynamic interplay between artistic expression and appreciation, and it has explored its essence and possibilities from multiple perspectives.

In this way, the Society is an academic community that, while grounded in the scholarly traditions cultivated over its long history, has continually responded to changing times and engaged with new challenges. Deeply rooted in educational practice in schools, it has served as an intellectual forum that connects research and education, theory and practice, and local and national communities. Its contribution to the development of art education in Japan has therefore been of profound significance.
